A network is divided into several smaller networks called subnets. This process is called subnetting. The IP address is divided into different levels of hierarchy. The first part is the network identifier (NetID) of the network, and the second part shows the host on the network. The datagrams are packets routed by the network layer across the Internet. There are many routing protocols. The Internet is a combination of many networks, and any routing protocol can be selected depending on the type of efficiency required from the network.

As a result of this property, RSVP leaves a large amount of soft-state information in the core routers. This creates scaling problems. Differentiated Services (DiffServ),10 on the other hand, aims to provide a simpler functionality than IntServ. This approach does not keep end-toend flow states within the core routers. The IP packets entering a DiffServ network are aggregated and treated according to their traffic classes and not as individual flows. The packets are classified using a 6-bit DiffServ Code Point (DSCP), which subsequently defines the traffic conditioning actions such as marking, metering, shaping, or policing (dropping).

The performance requirements for besteffort applications are flexible in the sense that they adapt to the resources available, for example, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) over Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). They work even with degraded performance as the available bandwidth decreases and end-to-end delay increases. Besteffort applications do not require the network to reserve resources for a connection.
